In spring 2002, La Financière agricole du Québec created an investment branch, Capital Financière agricole Inc., to provide venture capital for profit making projects that develop the agricultural and agri-food sector, thereby contributing to the economic growth of Québec.
The Fonds d'investissement pour la relève agricole (FIRA), a limited partnership, is a private company whose mission is to support the next generation of farmers.
FIRA was established in 2011 thanks to the association of the following partners: the Government of Quebec through La Financière agricole du Québec (La Financière agricole), the Fonds de solidarité des travailleurs et des travailleuses du Québec (FTQ – FSTQ) and Capital régional et coopératif Desjardins. Through their respective contributions of $25 million to this fund, these partners have supported the development of agriculture in Québec by helping to ensure the sustainability of our agricultural businesses and encouraging the new generation to take over. The investment period ended on January 31, 2025.
As of April 2025, the limited partnership, FIRA II, can begin its operations thanks to the investment of three partners: the Government of Quebec through La Financière agricole ($50 million), Desjardins Holding Financier inc. ($25 million) and the FSTQ ($25 million). FIRA II pursues the mission of supporting young people with their start-up projects, expansion or transfer of agricultural business projects in all regions of Quebec through investments in the form of patient capital.
